October 14-20: Change of Running Scenery

After a few weeks of hanging out at home, I got to hit the road again last week. This time, it was to judge a synchronized swimming meet in New Mexico, a place I called home for a little over a year. While I didn’t get to get out to see much because I was tied up at the meet, I did get in my training, complete with amazing views.

Monday: Nothing.

Tuesday: In the morning, 3.2 miles of running, followed by 25 minutes of lifting. In the evening, 4000 yards of swimming with DCRP Masters. Rounded out with 12 miles of bike commuting.

Wednesday: A 90 minute trainer ride, including high-cadence sprints and a 20-minute low-cadence hill climb simulation, in the morning. In the evening, 5.34 miles at the track including 4x1200 (5:52-5:47-5:49-5:51). 19 miles of fun bike commuting.

Thursday: Before hopping on a morning flight to Albuquerque, 45 minutes of easy spinning on the trainer and 30 minutes of lifting. I don’t want to talk about what time I woke up to get this done.

Friday: A 7.15 mile run, at 9:30 pace, which was much better than I expected given the 5000+ foot altitude.

Saturday: 3000 yards of swimming in between judging events.

Sunday: A 6.35 mile fartlek run (6x(1 min hard – 2 min easy)) along a trail on one of the highest points in Albuquerque. A great place to watch the sunrise.

Pace be damned, the scenery was worth the altitude-induced pain.

  1. A few things. First, your photos are breathtaking. I've never been to New Mexico, and now I very, very much want to visit. Gorgeous. Second, u cannot believe how much training you got in while traveling! That's awesome. Third, I think I'm joining your "no wetsuits" club. Is there some sort of membership process? I hate mine; it's stupid; and, I can swim faster without it.

    1. You just need to take a big dose of badass, and you're in.

  2. Now that's what I call altitude. I'd really like to try running at true altitude...I mean, I've run in some high and hilly areas, but absolutely nothing compared to the conditions you've been facing this week.

Particularly killer workouts on Tues and Weds as well!

    1. I think you'd enjoy it! The key is to not look at your pace until after :D.

  3. I have cousins in New Mexico, and my family visited a few years ago as part of our summer road trip. (Don't even get me started.) Unlike you, though, I did not take advantage of (or subject myself to) the trails and altitude. Awesome job putting in the work while on the road!
