August 19-25: Post-Ironman Training (or Not)

 
Unsurprisingly, I didn’t train much last week. The first three days after IM Mont Tremblant, I did absolutely nothing. This probably wasn’t the best approach – light swimming after a long race is usually my preference – but the cold I picked up immediately after the race left me feeling extremely fatigued and unmotivated to tend to my sore muscles and joints. Eventually, I crashed at work on Wednesday and got to spend some quality time in bed to kick that for good…and get back to moving.

Since the race didn’t go quite how I wanted it to, and I wasn’t training much, I had plenty of time to mope about it.

Until I went up to Boston for the weekend with Jason.

 
I have a meeting there this week, and jumped on the opportunity to spend some extra time there. The weather was beautiful, and in addition to enjoying an easy run on Sunday, we walked EVERYWHERE in the city and had a fantastic time.

Complete with chocolate penguins.

 
This was truly awesome, since I gave up ALL sugar (outside a limited amount during long training sessions) for FOUR MONTHS leading up to IM Mont Tremblant. And boy, was it awesome.

This week, I’m getting back to avoiding sugar like it’s poison and getting in all the vegetables and training. After all, I got in plenty of sloth last week.

Monday: A long drive home.

Tuesday: Nothing but unpacking and laundry.

Wednesday: Went home from work early once I realized I’d just spent 15 minutes trying to read one sentence. Crawled into bed with hot water and Nyquil, barely moved until sometime Thursday evening.

Thursday: More Nyquil and sleep for most of the day, then an easy 1500 meter swim in the evening, that made both my muscles and my sinuses feel better.

Friday: About 10 miles of biking before work on my ROAD BIKE (mostly because I still haven’t taken my time trial bike out of my car after IM Mont Tremblant).

Saturday: Nothing, except 14-some miles of walking around Boston. Jason even wore his Garmin to map it out.

Sunday: An untimed run of just under 6 miles along the Charles River (beautiful). There was minimal muscle soreness, no joint pain, and just a little fatigue towards the end.

Then we walked another 8 miles. Balanced out by eating ice cream for lunch (yes, we are both technically adults).

  1. Long live the chocolate penguin! My teammate who did IMLP said his biggest mistake post-race was doing nothing for four or five days, so it's great you did some SBR-ing. And no picture of the ice cream for lunch? ;)

  8. Getting organized is the first thing to proper training in triathlon. This starts in your head. Get a very clear picture, first and foremost, of what you wish to accomplish in the triathlon event and, just as importantly, which triathlon event you will be preparing for (sprint, olympic or ironman).
